Balancing all her weight on one leg, Rainey stood and watched as Mick battled an internal demon. He had been so nonchalant when he mentioned his motherâs library, but now that they were standing right outside the door, he seemed to be regretting his decision.
As much as she was dying to get into the room, she understood why he hesitated. It was hard to face painful memories, even if they were happy ones.
They stood at a precipice. Did he want to show her a side of himself that he kept locked away, his memories of his mother and her special place?
Rainey wanted more than anything to be a part of Mickâs life after all the drama following her was taken care of, but she didnât know if he felt the same. Her heart was telling her to take the leap and see where this would go, but her head was telling her to fight her emotions and leave at the first sign of trouble.
She knew at this point though that her heart was already in danger no matter how hard her head fought it.
Just when she was about to speak and deny that she needed a book to keep her occupied, he grabbed her hand and reached for the handle. The door squeaked loudly as it swung open. Dust danced in the sunbeams around the room, and she held her breath as she took in the beauty of the room. A floral armchair sat off to the side of the window, and a fallen foot stool rested across the room. The room seemed to have been preserved exactly how Mickâs mother had left it.
But it was the walls of books that grabbed her attention. The bookcases reached the ceiling and lined three walls. The dark wood gleamed in the light and complimented the floral accents around the room. It was a bookwormâs dream come true. She had to quell the urge to spin around and around in joy.
It was perfect.
Mick stepped into the room and looked around. Running a hand through his hair and resting it on the back of his neck, a mixture of emotions played over his face. Part of her was envious of him. He had bittersweet memories of this room so important to him, they hurt to think back on. Heâd had parents whoâd loved him and whose pictures still hung on the wall in honor of all their lives.
Looking over his shoulder at her, he beckoned her into the room.
âThereâs no order to the books. Feel free to pick whatever sparks your interest.â
She reached up to cup his cheek and pulled him down for a kiss, hoping to give him some silent support as he fought his emotions back.
âThank you.â
Promising herself that she would come back to this room later and explore, Rainey hopped away from him and quickly scanned a shelf of books. She selected a romance novel with a half-naked man on the cover. With a wicked smirk on her face, she turned back to Mick.
